Warriors, Lincolns both remain perfect

Regional rivals remain unbeaten to start the junior hockey season, as both Stratford and St. Marys maintained their winning ways last weekend.

The Stratford Warriors moved to 6-0 on the season after beating Chatham 3-1 on Friday night. Stratford’s Colin Slattery and Cole Lewis each scored a goal, while Carter McDougall stopped 24 shots to earn the the win between the pipes. 

Elsewhere, the St. Marys Lincolns got wins on Friday and Saturday to improve to 5-0. On Friday night, the Lincolns beat Sarnia 3-1 before blanking the Strathroy Rockets 5-0. 

The Stratford Fighting Irish kicked off the Ontario Super Hockey League season in style, doubling up Petrolia 4-2 on Friday night. Jared Nash got two goals and added a helper in the win. The Irish get their home schedule under way on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they welcome the Elora Rocks to the Allman Arena for a 7 p.m. start. Make sure you arrive early for the red carpet festivities with Village Media, and don't forget your used hockey equipment to donate to the Irish to help Rotary Hockey.

Both local Provincial Junior Hockey League teams ended the weekend with a win and a loss.

On Friday night, the Tavistock Braves doubled up Woodstock 4-2. Grady Murphy and Blair Stokes each chipped in with assists for the Braves in the win. Then on Saturday, the Braves suffered a 7-4 loss against New Hamburg. Blair Stokes scored, while James Hopper made 29 saves in net. 

The Mitchell Hawks fell 5-3 on Saturday night against Fergus. Ryan Gansevles and Kaden Brane had goals in defeat while Ethan Scrimgeour and Ben Medhurst picked up helpers. On Sunday afternoon, Mitchell clipped Kincardine 5-4 in overtime. Patrick Holloway led the way with two goals and one assist, Owen Holloway also added an assist. Gansevles had three assists in the win, and Ethan Scrimgeour also added a helper in the win.
