The Stratford District Secondary School Golden Bears were in Woodstock for the 2024 Spring Classic invitational meet Wednesday, May 8, and they came back packing some hardware from the event.
Paige Taylor ran to gold in the 400m junior girl’s race in a time of 1:02.86, while Rachael Barber earned top spot in junior girl’s javelin with a throw of 24.18m.
Olivia Mark took home silver in the senior girl’s 200m with a run of 27.16 seconds. She added a bronze medal in high jump, landing a 4.55m attempt for third place. Jashan Singh collected silver in the junior boy’s discus with a throw of 46.06m, making him one of two competitors to break the meet’s division record. He then added a fifth-place finish in shot put with a 12.91m throw.
Maddox Anderson won silver by posting a 28.21m throw in novice boy’s discus and added bronze to his haul with a 10.55m toss in shot put.
Other Golden Bears who did well on the day include bronze medalists Joel Gates (novice boy’s 3000m - 10:05.70), Chrissy Rupert (junior girl’s 3000m - 13:12.90), Hailee Phelan (senior girl’s shot put - 7.98m), Barber (junior girl’s shot put - 9.12m), and Preston Baillie (senior boy’s long jump - 5.71m).
The Bears’ novice boy’s 1200m sprint medley team brought back a bronze with a time of 3:09:57.
SDSS will head to Clinton on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (May 14-15) for the Huron-Perth Track and Field championships.
