The St. Mike’s Catholic Secondary School senior girl’s basketball team captured gold at the WOSSAA ‘AA’ championships after going 2-0 to claim the title last week.
The Warriors downed John Paul II from London 49-38 in their semi-final game before beating out Parkside 56-41 for gold. With the win, the Warriors advanced to the OFSAA ‘AA’ championships in North Bay this week
In junior play, the Warriors went 0-2 at WOSSAA, falling 21-16 to Clarke Road in semi-final play before bowing down 47-9 to Parkside in the broze medal game.
It wasn’t a good showing for the Stratford District Secondary School Golden Bears in either draw at the WOSSAA ‘AAA’ championships; the seniors fell 50-26 to Laurier in the semifinals before losing 56-31 to St. Thomas Aquinas in the third-place game, while the juniors suffered a 64-17 defeat to the Lucas Vikings in the semis before falling 53-13 to Banting in the bronze medal match.
In WOSSAA ‘AA’ volleyball, the Warriors lost their semi-final match 3-0 to Oakridge (25-8, 25-21, 25-21) before falling to St. Joe’s 3-0 in the bronze medal game (25-23, 25-11, 25-23). The seniors suffered a similar fate, falling 3-0 to the Moncalm Cougars 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) before bowing out to Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute 3-1 (18-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-19).
The Golden Bears played host to the WOSSAA ‘AAA’ tournament, with the seniors coming home as medal winners. They opened the tournament beating the Saunders Sabres 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 26-24) in the semis before falling to AB Lucas 3-0 in the finals (25-21, 26-24, 28-26). In junior action, SDSS fell in five sets to Saunders (losing the final set 15-11). They then dropped the bronze to St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-19).
