The Stratford Police Service hosted a joint services traffic initiative on Tuesday in collaboration with the Woodstock Police Service, London Police Service, St. Thomas Police Service, and Aylmer Police Service.

Similar initiatives occur throughout the year with each police service taking a turn to host within their community.

The initiative focused on the City of Stratford and targeted the four main offences that lead to fatal motor vehicle collisions: speeding, seat belts, cell phones, and impaired driving.

As a result of the initiative, a total of 72 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act, and one charge was laid under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Two motor vehicles were impounded for 14 days for stunt driving and two driver’s licences were suspended for the same period of time.

One of the stunt driving charges involved a pickup truck that performed 360 degree spins (doughnuts) in the middle of the intersection at Romeo Street South and Ontario Street.

The other involved a vehicle travelling 110km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone on Erie Street.

The Criminal Code charge involved a driver who was stopped shortly before 11 a.m. at Huron Street and St. Vincent Street and displayed signs of being impaired by drug. He was identified as a 66-year-old resident of Seaforth.

He was arrested and charged with operation while impaired. His motor vehicle was impounded for seven days, and his licence was suspended for 90 days.

The Stratford Police Service would like to thank all officers from the participating services for their assistance in these traffic initiatives, which help to keep all our roadways safe.
