NEWS RELEASE
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE
*************************
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Unit will be patrolling county snowmobile trails in the effort for education and enforcement, allowing those snowmobiling to do so in a safer environment.
With the winter season now upon us, the snowmobile trails all over the county are starting to open, and the OPP Traffic Unit will be proactively patrolling the trails in an effort to increase safety of those snowmobiling.
The OPP would like to remind local residents of the following tips to ensure safety is at the forefront while out on the trails:
- Drive sober
- Check fuel levels before heading out
- Obey speed limits and local municipal laws
- Always carry an emergency kit and a tow rope.
- Treat any frozen waterways with absolute caution
- Be especially vigilant coming into corners or cresting hills
- Wear an approved helmet and appropriate winter clothing
- Bring a fully charged cell phone in case of an emergency
- Seek permission from property owners before venturing onto private fields
- Before leaving home, notify someone where you will be riding and when you expect to return
- Adhere to open Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club (OFSC) trails to determine the safest terrain to ride on
Driving too fast for conditions, impaired driving or driving on unsafe frozen waterways are the leading causes of snowmobile fatalities in our province.
Stay alert, plan ahead and keep safety the top priority when heading out on the trails.
