The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Unit are taking part in the province-wide traffic safety initiative, focusing on motorized snowmobiles from February 10 until February 17, 2025.

With the winter season upon us, the Wellington County OPP Traffic Unit will be proactively patrolling the snowmobile trails in an effort to increase safety of those snowmobiling.

The Wellington County OPP would like to remind local residents of the following tips to ensure safety is at the forefront while out on the trails:

Do:

  • Drive sober
  • Check fuel levels before heading out
  • Obey speed limits and local municipal laws
  • Be especially vigilant coming into corners or cresting hills
  • Bring a fully charged cell phone in case of an emergency
  • Seek permission from property owners before venturing onto private fields

Do Not:

  • Ride on railway tracks
  • Leave children unsupervised with youth snowmobiles
  • Leave young children unattended in snowmobile sleds
  • Go snowmobiling with an infant (infants cannot endure the cold)

Did you know?

The top three causes of fatal snowmobile collisions are speeding, impaired driving and carelessness.

Stay alert, plan ahead and keep safety the top priority when heading out on the trails.
