The Stratford Police Service says a 59-year-old driver from Woodstock was arrested following two hit-and-run crashes in Stratford Saturday afternoon.

Police say shortly after 12:30 p.m. they received a report of a hit-and-run  on Lorne Avenue East at Downie Street.

A black Nissan Murano travelling east on Lorne rear-ended a black Mercedes SUV, causing it to collide with a blue Honda, police said.

The Nissan fled the scene heading east on Lorne, striking a black van before turning south on Perth Road 112 (Downie Street), police said.

Police said the Nissan was observed entering the ditch on Road 112 at Line 29 and failing to stop for a stop sign at the intersection.

A description of the driver was provided and the licence plate was obtained from the front bumper of the Nissan, which had become stuck in the rear of the Mercedes when the Nissan fled the scene, police said.

Stratford Police said the driver was located and arrested in Woodstock by members of the Woodstock Police Service.

He was identified as a 59-year-old male resident of Woodstock and was transported to Stratford Police Headquarters.

He was charged with the Criminal Code offences of failure to stop after an accident and dangerous operation, as well as the Highway Traffic Act offences of failure to report an accident, careless driving, and disobeying a stop sign.

He was released on an undertaking with a court date of Oct. 7.
