Jamie Petrie has resigned as coach of the Stratford Fighting Irish following an incident after the team's game against the Elora Rocks in Elora on Friday, Dec. 13.

Neither team nor the Ontario Super Hockey League have released details, but initial reports indicate that Petrie became involved in an altercation with Elora Rocks President Rich Wigmore. As a result, Wellington OPP were involved and Petrie was charged with assault.

Ontario Super Hockey League (OSHL) Director Bill Ryan released a statement on social media saying the league was aware of the incident and, as of 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, they had accepted Petrie's resignation as both Stratford's coach and as a member of the league's executive.

"The OSHL is committed to providing a safe environment for all of its players, staff, and fans," the statement read. "We will continue to implement this moving forward. As this is an offurrence that is under active police investigation there will be no further comment at this time."

Jeff Morris, the Irish's head of business relations, had something similar to say via email Monday morning.

"Since we are still working through things, we will need a day or two before we can provide any information," he said.

Wigmore had not returned any requests for comment as of the posting of this story. Petrie is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on January 17.
