Kickoff of the inaugural season of the Huron Perth Flag Football is just over a month away.

League founders David and Mélanie Levinson said the new league kicks off September 7 and is geared towards players 6-16 years of age, and there is still time to register players.

“We noticed there were not any football programs anywhere locally, not even in schools, and children would have to drive to London or Sarnia,” Levinson said.

No experience is needed as the hour and a half program will see participants learn skills for half the time before playing a game for the other 45 minutes. Registration fees run $195 and that includes the field time, flags, a jersey for all participants, MVP awards each week, and playoffs. A league championship game will cap the season, taking place on November 2.

Levinson said that so far the registration has taken off.

“We only launched a month ago and we are roughly half full, with registrations coming in from all over Huron and Perth Counties,” he said. “They’re coming from Stratford, Exeter, St. Marys, Brussels, Clinton, Goderich and more.” He added that the organization has partnered with NFL Flag Football.

Games will take place on Saturdays in Exeter at the Exeter Community Soccer Fields, starting at 9 a.m. and running until noon. The league schedule runs from Saturday, September 7 until November 2 with a break for Thanksgiving.

“We plan on starting off with roughly sixteen teams depending on registration,” Levinson said. “We could always look at expanding next year if the league takes off.”
