Syphilis infections are rising across Ontario, including in Huron Perth. According to the Government of Canada, Syphilis rates have increased 109 per cent over the last four years in Canada.
A challenge with diagnosing Syphilis is how subtle symptoms can be. You may not notice any of the symptoms associated with Syphilis but you can still pass it without any visible symptoms. If left untreated the infection can move through different stages each with their own signs and symptoms. A full breakdown of the different signs and symptoms can be found here.
Syphilis can be cured by antibiotics usually given through an injection. The earlier you start treatment the better your health outcomes. People are encouraged to test regularly for sexually transmitted infections.
What to do if you are diagnosed and being treated:
- Follow treatment advice from health care providers
- Avoid contact with sores or sexual activities with your sexual partner(s) until you and and your partner(s) have:
- completed your antibiotic treatment and
- been told by your health care provider that the infection is gone
Once you have been treated you will need to go for followup blood tests to ensure the infection is gone. It is also very important to notify all sexual partners about their risk of infection, so they can get tested and treated as needed. If you are uncomfortable notifying your partner or partners, ask your healthcare provider or local health unit for support.
