This year marks the 70th anniversary of Co-operators in Stratford, a milestone that pays tribute to the enduring legacy of its very first agent – and community steward - Pat Powell. Pat was known for going the extra mile to build financial security for his clients and community, bringing his unique and innovative approach to insurance.

In 1958, an era when traditional offices were still the norm, Stratford was primarily an agricultural community. From spring floods, fall harvests and winter freezes, Pat found many of his clients were too busy working and earning their living to make a plan that protected their future. Pat transformed a Volkswagen camper van into a mobile office, complete with comfortable seating, a propane heater, and painted with the words “Co-op Insurance Mobile Office.” His vehicle would often be seen parked roadside as he ventured out into farmers’ fields to meet clients.

Mark Feeney, Vice President, Central Ontario Region, Co-operators, welcomes the celebration of this significant milestone.

“Recent times have been challenging for many, but through it all, we remain steadfast in our support for Stratford and its hardworking residents,” said Feeney. “As we reflect on our rich history here, we look forward to a future grounded in compassion, service, and continued innovation that strengthens resilience in our community.”

Today, Peter Maranger, Financial Advisor for Co-operators Stratford, proudly carries on Pat's tradition of going the extra mile and community service.  Peter and his team support over 4,250 members of the Stratford community, by building their financial security, protecting their homes, loved ones, and even their retirements. Beyond ensuring that his clients can achieve peace of mind with a secure future, Peter also donates and volunteers to the local Community Food Centre, House of Blessing, and St. John’s Ambulance. His proactive engagement with local initiatives demonstrates the spirit of giving back that defined Pat and continues to be a cornerstone of the Stratford community.

Mayor Martin Ritsma of Stratford says it is a privilege to acknowledge the 70th anniversary of Co-operators in Stratford.

“Co-operators has provided reliable and affordable home and auto insurance to our local residents and businesses for 70 years,” says Mayor Ritsma. “Beyond providing financial and insurance services, Co-operators is so much more! Peter Maranger and his team live by the philosophy of giving back to the community where they do business. This exceptional philanthropy elevates the quality of life of our entire community. On behalf of the residents of Stratford and the City of Stratford, congratulations to Co-operators.”

Peter remarks that Pat Powell's trailblazing efforts set a remarkable precedent.

"As we celebrate 70 years of service in the community, our office is inspired to uphold the same level of commitment and innovation, ensuring we’re there for clients when they need us most."
