Residents in the Downie Street-St. George Street area of Stratford are going to need some patience as city crews deal to identify and correct a broken water main in the intersection.

Sean Beech, the city’s manager of environmental services, said that the recent cold temperatures have had his department working on a number of similar issues like this recently, and this latest call came in early Thursday morning.

“We got a call around 5:30 a.m. today about a broken main on Downie Street, and we’re currently waiting for utility locates before we can begin the work,” Beech said. “We’re also trying to isolate which main it is because there are two of them located in that particular intersection.”

Beech said there is an eight-inch main and a 12-inch one located there and his department has been doing some de-pressurizing of the mains in an attempt to identify the broken one. He added they’ll have to remove the asphalt once it is safe to do so in order to get the job done correctly.

“We can’t say right now how many people have been affected by this because we’re not sure which is the broken main,” he added. “Once we determine that, we’ll have a better idea of how many people are being affected.”
