February 5, 1931  -  July 18, 2024

Hen Poy Jung died on July 18, 2024 at the Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth, at the age of 93.

He will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 78 years, Bo Kam Jung and his loving children – daughter Wai Ling Cheung (Ken) and son James Jung. Son Ken Jung (Josephine) predeceased him in 2018. Also predeceased is grandson Jason Cheung (2010), but living and missing him are grandson’s Kenny Cheung (Yan Du), Chris Jung (Katya), Timothy Jung (Ann-Marie), Jonathan Jung (Monica) and granddaughter Jessica Jung. He also leaves behind his three great-grandchildren Dylan Cheung, Charlotte Jung and Alyson Jung

Poy spent his life cooking, growing and serving food. He spent a decade of his life working at the “Golden Bamboo Restaurant” and another decade at the “Commodore Restaurant” as a cook specializing in Chinese Canadian cuisine. From 1981 to 1989 up to retirement he was co-owner, with his wife Bo Kam, of “The Oriental Kitchen.”

He had three main goals in life – to own a home (with the mortgage paid) to have his three children get a university education and to own his own business, all of which were granted before retiring. Later in life he spent the majority of his waking hours working in his garden in the backyard of the family home growing a variety of vegetables and melons.

Poy immigrated from Canton, China in the 1950’s to work in the hospitality industry in order to earn money and support his wife and two small children back in Hong Kong, until they were able to join him in Stratford, Ontario in the early 1960’s where their third child was born. He had a tremendous work ethic, a very polite nature and a kind heart, always wanting to do the “right” thing for others and family. Along with his wife, they taught their children to always treat others with respect and to demonstrate compassion, empathy and remain humble. They demonstrated what it means to work hard so that others recognize your labours and provide opportunities and as such, were accountable, resilient and always trying to improve. Poy led by example, emulating how to survive and how not to be a victim! He knew that trust is earned and not merely given – through capability, integrity and honesty.

He was not only a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, but a wonderful man, a protector, our true role model – a man that all of us loved and respected. We will always miss him dearly. A private family graveside service will be held.
