Good weekend for local GOJHL teams, while PHJL teams struggle

Warriors beat pair of Kings, while Braves split weekend set

There were lots of goals, and two wins for local Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League teams in their home openers. 

Stratford doubled up Elmira on Friday night 4-2. Cole Lewis led the way in scoring, scoring twice and adding two assists in the win. Dax Vader added three points including the other two goals for the Warriors. Goaltender Carter McDougall stopped 29 of 31 shots in the win. They followed that up Saturday night in Komoka with a 4-1 win over the Kings. Lewis, Quinn Kipfer, Drew Hodge and Tyler Kelly scored to lead Stratford to the win, with assists from Zachary Schooley, Jacob Wiseman, Rhyse Brown and Nicholas Hambly. McDougall earned the win in net for the second night in a row, stopping 28 of 29 shots.

Elsewhere on the opening Friday of the GOJHL, the St. Marys Lincolns beat St. Thomas 4-1. 

Meanwhile in the Provincial Junior Hockey League on Friday night it was a scoring fest in Tavistock. The Braves outlasted New Hamburg to win 9-6. Two players from Stratford got in on the scoring fun: Grady Murphy had two assists, while Blair Strokes added a goal. Goaltender James Hopper stopped 32 of 38 shots. The Braves then skated to a 5-2 loss in Wellesley to the Applejacks.

On Saturday the Mitchell fell to the Hanover Barons in their home opener 7-1.
