Golden Bears volleyball teams go back-to-back

WOSSAA volleyball hosted in Stratford runs Tuesday at Agriplex; WOSSAA basketball goes Wednesday in multiple locations

The Stratford District Secondary School captured both the senior and junior boy’s volleyball titles last week, with both teams earning the title for the second straight season.

In senior play, the Golden Bears beat out the St. Michael’s Warriors in straight sets 25-16, 25-13, 25-18. The juniors needed four sets to get the job done against the St. Marys Salukis, winning 25-12, 24-26, 25-13 and 25-17.

As a result, both squads now head into the WOSSAA ‘AAA’ championships on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Stratford Agriplex. Both teams will see the Saunders Sabres in the semi-final round, with the juniors taking the court at 10 a.m., followed by the seniors at noon. The other schools competing in senior play are the AB Lucas Vikings and the Medway High School Cowboys, while the juniors are joined by St. Thomas Aquinas and Lucas.

The bronze medal matches start at 2 p.m. (junior) and 4 p.m. (senior), while the gold medal games run at the same times.

As a result of their finishes in girl’s basketball, both SDSS teams qualified for WOSSAA ‘AAA’ at Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School in London on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Both teams will face off with the Laurier Secondary School Rams in the semi-finals.

The Huron Perth girl’s basketball champions will head to the ‘AA’ and ‘A’ WOSSAA tournaments respectively: St. Mike’s will take on John Paul II Catholic Secondary School from London in one semi-final of the ‘AA’ championships at Parkside Collegiate, while Parkside and St. Joseph’s meet in the other on November 13; the junior St. Marys DCVI Salukis heads to Strathroy’s Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School for a semi-final date with Woodstock Collegiate Institute. Holy Cross the Mitchell District Secondary meet in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
