The Township of Perth South is pleased to announce the appointment of Deputy Mayor Sue Orr to the position of Mayor, effective immediately. This appointment follows the sudden and tragic passing of Mayor Jim Aitcheson.
Mayor Orr has served as Deputy Mayor with distinction and brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role. Her leadership and commitment to the community have been evident throughout her tenure, and she is well-prepared to guide the Township through this transition.
"While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Mayor Aitcheson, we are confident that Mayor Orr will continue his legacy of service and dedication to our Township," said former Mayor and veteran Council Member Bob Wilhelm who introduced the motion to appoint Deputy Mayor Orr. "Her vision and leadership will be invaluable as we move forward.", said Councillor Wilhelm.
Mayor Orr expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this new capacity. "It is an honor to be appointed as Mayor of the Township of Perth South. I am committed to working tirelessly for our community and continuing the work that Mayor Aitcheson started. Together, we will navigate this challenging time and build a brighter future for all residents,” said the newly appointed Mayor Orr. The appointment of Mayor Orr creates a new vacancy on the Council which the members proposed to address at the next meeting of Township Council on December 17, 2024.
A celebration of life for the late Mayor Aitcheson will be held on December 4, 2024, at the Downie Optimist Community Center from 1:00-4:00 p.m. The Township extends its deepest condolences to the Aitcheson family during this difficult time.
