Tavistock's Team Unity synchronized skating club will be hosting a roller skating fundraiser this Saturday, Sept. 21, to help raise money to send their juvenile and intermediate teams to the Nova Competition in Montreal in November.

As the old song goes, they get by with a little help from their friends.

Team Unity Synchronized Skating will be hosting a fundraiser at the Tavistock Pavillion this coming Saturday to help them earn money to help send a pair of their teams to the Nova Competition in Montreal, Que., this coming November.

Team Unity’s Head Coach, Tara Wilkins, said the club picked Nova to give their skaters more exposure to Quebec judges and what they’re looking for. Waterloo will play host to the Canada Cup in February next year, so Miller said this would be good preparation.

“It’s also important to try and give these skaters an extra competition this season for more experience at a high-level event,” she said.

To help get them there, the team will be hosting a roller skating fundraiser that is scheduled to run from 1-9 p.m. Entry fees are $5 per person, and skates are available to rent for $10. Skating will be done in one-hour time slots to help accommodate the number of people as well as equipment rentals.

“Our goal is to raise between $1,000-$1,500, which will go to support some of the travel expenses for these two teams,” Wilkins said. “Team Unity draws youth skaters from Norfolk, Oxford, Perth, Wellington and Waterloo counties.”

Wilkins added that both teams still have some qualifications in front of them, and that the intermediate squad still needs to qualify for the Canada Cup.

“That’s our national championship and only the top six teams from Ontario will qualify,” she said. “Last year we earned fifth place at the Canada Cup out of 18 teams, so our goal this year is to qualify and earn a top-three finish. This is one of the reasons we’re looking to head to Montreal in November – to showcase our programs and gain valuable feedback going into our season.”
