NEWS RELEASE
UPPER THAMES RIVER CONSERVATION AUTHORITY
*************************
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) reminds everyone to exercise extreme caution around all rivers, streams, ditches, and ponds. The warmer temperatures and rain are melting much of the snow cover, and the runoff has increased flows in local waterways.
An average of 15 mm of rain fell across the Upper Thames River watershed since Sunday evening, on top of an estimated average of 20 mm water equivalent content in the snow.
Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with fast-moving cold water, pose a serious hazard. People are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses, and to not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It is not safe to take shelter along riverbanks or in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.
The UTRCA does not expect any significant flooding, but water may spill over the banks in areas known to traditionally flood in the spring. Flows in upstream areas (Mitchell, Stratford, Woodstock) peaked during the day Tuesday. Peak flows are expected into the late evening in London. Many streams and rivers will remain higher than normal for the rest of the week.
The UTRCA is operating its flood control reservoirs at Fanshawe, Wildwood, and Pittock Conservation Areas to reduce any downstream flooding.
