Stratford Fall Fair kicks off Thursday for a weekend full of fun

Admission is free once again, and the gates open at 1 p.m. Thursday

It’s older than even Canada itself, and it's returning to Stratford this week.

The Stratford Fall Fair celebrates its 183rd anniversary this year, and organizers are excited to bring the event geared towards all ages to life. Throughout the years the fair has undergone challenges like all events. There have been reports of vandalism, people sneaking in the gates, and even a change of venue.

“We moved to the new complex when it was first built,” said Heidi Danen, the co-chair of the fair committee and member of the Stratford Agricultural Society. “With the move we had to figure out how we would operate the fair on pavement, but I think over the last 20 years we have adapted and tried to work to evolve the fair to the current location.”

Gates open up for this year's fair on Thursday at 1 p.m., and the fun starts with senior's euchre, but opening ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m. The best part of the fair in Stratford is free admission.

“About ten years ago the fair was held the same weekend as the International Plowing Match which was also taking place in Perth County,” said Danen. “The committee met to discuss ways to bring people to the fair, including discounted rates, but after factoring in things like weather, security features and more, we decided to make admission free.”

The fair will feature something for everyone from exhibits, to a midway, to a kids korner, lazer tag, and more.

“The farm events are always highlights, as they give everyone a chance to interact with and learn about animals including sheep, goats, horses, and cows,” said Danen. “This year we are also hosting a family barbeque, tractor races, and new this year is a touch the truck event thanks to Elliott Motors, as well as a beer garden.”

Throughout the history of the fair many people from all over the province, and further have visited the fair.

“I think the community of Stratford which is expanding quickly has come out to support the fair more and more each year,” said Danen. “Our numbers in attendance have grown over the past few years, and whether the good weather has helped we are unsure, but it is nice to see and we have been lucky.”
