On a decorative tree in a main room, residents are writing anonymous notes, listing how the library has helped them grow.
"I love the library," one note reads. "The librarians are so kind and helpful!"
Ontario Public Library Week is up and going and residents are celebrating Stratford Public Library (SPL) and the work of staff.
“Libraries level the playing field by providing access to all,” explained SPL CEO Krista Robinson. “They provide space where anyone, regardless of their economic status, can gather to learn, share, work, reflect, study, collaborate and socialize – all free of charge.”
The notes are a good way to pass along message of encouragement. One wrote that it is a safe place for their daughter to grow. Another highlighted the friendships they have made at the library and the help librarians have provided in photo copying the phone messages they needed.
At the latest Stratford City Council meeting, Ontario Public Library Week was officially proclaimed, clearing the way for a week of highlighting the library’s valuable role in the community and emphasizing the importance of literacy and education in society.
This year’s province-wide theme is "Libraries for Life," focusing on the lasting impact of libraries as vital community hubs that foster education, knowledge, and cultural enrichment.
“Some call libraries the living room of a community," Robinson added. "They enhance lives, resulting in healthier and more prosperous communities.”
In Stratford, those who sign up for a free library card have access to thousands of books, CDs, movies and magazines for all ages and abilities.
SPL also loans out more unique items including passes to provincial parks, birding backpacks, robotic kits, and household energy meters. Most of them can be borrowed without late fees.
And there's a range of programs for all ages.
“Babytime and Story Starters share the love of reading with young ones,” SPL said in a news release. “Summer Reading Club keeps the summer slide from happening in children, and teens enjoy many activities to earn volunteer hours.
“Adults of all ages enjoy visiting the MakerSpace, trying out new technologies, and learning by doing, while seniors enjoy many of the music programs and speakers throughout the year.”
