Melanie Kindrachuk, Public Service Librarian at Stratford Public Library is the recipient of the prestigious Leadership in Adult Readers’ Advisory Award by the Ontario Public Library Association. The award honours excellence in readers’ advisory service to adults.
Reader's Advisory is a personalized service provided by librarians to help patrons find books that match their interests, preferences, and reading habits. Melanie says, “I've always loved connecting with library users over their reading choices. It's a great way to get to know our community and share the joys of our library collections, too. Matching up the right book with the right reader is a highlight of our job!”
Melanie is a dedicated advocate for adult reader's advisory, integrating it seamlessly into library services, programs, and partnerships while also mentoring and empowering colleagues to excel in this area.
In her commitment to enhancing reader experience at the Stratford Library, she also developed a comprehensive course tailored for library staff, aimed at mastering the nuances of the practice. This initiative ensures that those visiting the library for their next great read will be able to find something they will love. Melanie’s passion for readers’ advisory is an inspiration to others, including her colleagues.
This award was presented to Melanie at the 2024 Ontario Public Library Association’s RA in a Day Event on April 30, 2024. When asked about the award, she said, “I'm truly grateful to receive the Adult Leadership in Readers' Advisory Award, thanks to a nomination from my colleagues. Being recognized for my work in this area by our provincial association is a real honour.”
