New scam text claiming unsettled ETR violation

Police remind the public not to engage any suspicious texts received from unknown senders

A new text scam has been popping up on phones of late, telling people of a potential fine if they don’t settle an unpaid 407 ETR toll.

Numerous reports have populated social media about the latest scam, with those posting about it stating they haven’t used the 407 in years, if at all.

The text of the scam reads as follows:

[407 ETR Toll Alert] – Toll Violation Notice

Or records indicate that you may have an unpaid toll violation on the 407 ETR. Please settle your outstanding balance online within 24 hours at the link below. If payment is not received by the due date, you may face fines, escalating late fees, vehicle registration  suspension with ServiceOntario, and potential legal action with significant penalties.

The message then proceeds to list a URL people are expected to click on, with the message ‘(Reply Y and re-open this message to click the link, or copy it to your browser.)’.

People are reminded by police not to engage with any strange text messages from unrecognized contacts requesting you to take action.
