With Christmas just over a month away, the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth has launched its Hope for the Holidays Campaign to raise critical funds for pets and caretakers in need.

The organization says it has been “operating consistently in crisis mode this year.” Between its two centres in Stratford and Kitchener, there are currently 223 animals being cared for, along with another 100 pets on a waiting list to get help.

“Adoptions have slowed despite reducing adoption fees, donation sizes have decreased, demand for outreach programs has skyrocketed, demand for low-cost veterinary services has grown exponentially and, there’s a high volume of animals coming into our animal centres, and call volumes for surrendering have significantly increased,” explained Victoria Baby, HSKWSP’s chief executive officer, in a news release.

The Humane Society does not receive government funding, and relies on donors and fundraisers to provide dozens of critical services for people and pets.

“Some of these crucial services include our emergency boarding program, pet pantry program and our veterinary outreach program,” Baby added.

From today through to the December 31, people can do the following to support the Hope for the Holidays campaign:

  • Spread some hope, love and joy by opening your hearts and homes and adopt an animal in need.
  • Extend a loving hand and give the gift of time this year! Make pet blankets with friends and family, run a food and supply drive, or host your own fundraiser.
  • Give a one-time donation or become a monthly donor.
  • Gift an item from HSKWSP’s wish list and make an animal very happy this holiday season!
