HPCDSB students demonstrate success on provincial assessments

The Board expresses its pride in our on-going focus on student achievement that continues to be reflected in these results. The Board continues to have one of the highest participation rates in the Province.

The students in the Primary Division of Huron-Perth Catholic exceeded the provincial average in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

  • 78% of the students in the Primary Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Reading compared to the provincial average of 71%.
  • 68% of the students in the Primary Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Writing compared to the provincial average of 64%.
  • 67% of the students in the Primary Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Mathematics compared to the provincial average of 61%.

The Director of Education, Chris N. Roehrig said, “Our elementary results continue to demonstrate excellence in relation to the rest of the Province; at the same time we understand the need to keep our focus on improvement especially in the Intermediate Division and in Mathematics.” Roehrig said, “The Board recently approved an ambitious strategic plan which sets the stage for stronger results going forward.”

“Our EQAO results reflect the hard work of students and staff as they continue to progress toward excellence in literacy and mathematics. We are proud of their achievements but recognize there is still work to be done. As a Board, we remain diligent in our efforts to provide the support and resources necessary to reach these goals.” said Mary Helen Van Loon, Chair of the Board.

The students in the Junior Division of Huron-Perth Catholic exceeded the provincial averages in Reading and Writing and are approaching the provincial average in Mathematics.

  • 88% of the students in the Junior Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Reading compared to the provincial average of 82%.
  • 83% of the students in the Junior Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Writing compared to the provincial average of 80%.
  • 46% of the students in the Junior Division achieved Level 3 or 4 in Mathematics compared to the provincial average of 50%.

Grade 9 students participated in the provincial assessment of the destreamed Grade 9 curriculum. Our students’ performance on the assessment indicates a trend in achievement consistent with students across the province in Grade 9 Mathematics.

  • 55% of the students in Grade 9 Mathematics achieved Level 3 or 4 compared to the provincial average of 54%.
  • 98% of our eligible students participated in the assessment, compared to a provincial rate of 90%. We are committed to an inclusive model of support where our students receive the support they need to participate.

The achievement of Grade 10 students who participated in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test aligned with the provincial average.

  • 84% of students in Grade 10 were successful on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, consistent with the provincial average of 85%.
  • 98% of our eligible students wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, compared to 92% provincially.

The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board is committed to an inclusive model of support for the achievement and wellness of our students. As such, we ensure that first-time eligible students participate in the OSSLT and receive the support they need. The achievement of Grade 10 students who participated in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test aligned with the provincial average.

The annual assessments were conducted in the spring of 2023 for the Primary and Junior Divisions and at the end of each semester for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Grade 9 Mathematics was conducted at the end of each semester.
