Green Recognition Program recipients accept awards

The inaugural awards were a huge success, said the City of Stratford's climate change program manager, with a phenomenal showing from Stratford's community

The proverbially green carpet was brought out this week.

The inaugural Green Recognition Program announced their first recipients, recognizing Stratford individuals and organizations that have implemented sustainable practises in their daily lives.

Sadaf Ghalib, City of Stratford’s manager of climate change programs, and Mayor Martin Ritsma officially presented the award at Monday night’s city council meeting, though the names were originally released at Climate Momentum’s eco-street party last weekend.

“This has been the first year of this initiative,” Ghalib explained ahead of giving out the awards “We are pleased to announce that the response from the community has been phenomenal.”

The awards were separated into three categories: waste reduction and diversion, energy management and electrification, and the green building award.

The recipients for the waste reduction and diversion awards were: Keystone Hospitality, the Eco Club at Stratford District Secondary School, Vicwest, the Rotary Club of Stratford, Rosehurst, the Green Hair Spa, MTE Consultants, The Gentle Rain, and Sam Ogilvie and Lorne Bolton.

The recipients for the energy management and electrification awards were John Hotson, Laura Clark, and Carolyn Schmidt.

The Green Building Awards were presented to Vicwest and Tom McKay.

“I would like to congratulate and thank the work of the city, especially Ms. Ghalib, in regards to this project,” Mayor Ritsma said.  “We look forward to the work that will follow by residents and businesses.”

The program is a community call to action that is a part of a larger plan of the City’s to reduce emissions in Stratford to 30 per cent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
