The new year brings 365 opportunities. One is making New Years resolutions, and trying your best to stick to them. A fundraiser aims to help people, while also helping with New Years resolutions.

Go Dry is a fundraiser that encourages people to start the year off by going alcohol free or dry, while also raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The two are innately connected as drinking any amount of alcohol increases the risk of nine different types of cancers including:  head and neck, breast, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, colorectal, and liver cancers. The less you drink, the less risks. Having no more than two drinks away can help lower your cancer risk.

The statistics are sobering: in 2015, 3,300 new cancer cases were due to drinking alcohol. In fact, over 40 percent of Canadians are not aware of the risks of cancer increasing due to alcohol.

Since 2016, the Canadian Cancer Society has raised over $15 million to support people impacted by cancer thanks to the Go Dry challenge. The support of donors has led to a survival rate of 64 percent of cancer diagnoses.
