A cooling centre remains open at the Stratford Rotary Complex until Thursday evening.
The cooling centre will be open Wednesday until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The space is air conditioned, washrooms are on site, and water is available.
Current extreme highs are very atypical for early September.
Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is recommending everyone take measures to protect from extreme heat, such as:
- Drinking plenty of cool liquids, especially water, before feeling thirsty.
- Rescheduling outdoor and strenuous activities during cooler parts of the day.
- Wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric.
- Avoiding sun exposure and shading yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed, breathable hat or using an umbrella.
- Preparing meals that don’t need to be cooked in your oven and closing curtains or blinds during the day to keep the sun out.
- And never leaving people or pets inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight and
The HPPH is also recommending to check on neighbours, family, and friends who may be at a greater risk of heat related illnesses, such as older adults, infants, young children, people with chronic illnesses, people who work or exercise in the heat, and people experiencing homelessness.
In addition to the cooling centre at the Rotary Complex, the Stratford Public Library is also available, and the Anne Hathaway Park splash pad near the corner of Downie and Bruce streets is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The heat warning is expected to end on Thursday with the arrival of a cold front.
