Welcome to Around the Playground. Towards the end of each month, this space will provide information from local schools including upcoming events, big accomplishments and more to help keep you connected. 

Local schools are gearing up for the annual Calling All Three Year Olds program. Its designed for children who will be three or four years old by December 31, 2024 who will be eligible to attend full day kindergarten next year. 

To register, start by contacting your local school and if you are not sure what school that is you can visit the Avon Maitland District School Board website to find details. After contacting your local school you fill out an online registration form, and once you do an email will be sent indicating you have completed the pre-registration process.

The following information will be needed to complete the registration: proof of address, proof of the student’s legal name and date of birth, immunization records,  and proof of custody or immigration documents where applicable. 

Romeo Public School is holding their event on November 4 between 12:30-2:30 p.m.; Anne Hatheway Public School is holding theirs on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 9-11:30 a.m.; Avon Public School will host theirs on Thursday Nov. 21 in the school gym that morning; Bedford Public School hosts their event on November 29 with registration in the gym.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

A partnership between Bedford Public School and Harvey’s restaurant has created a delicious and important fundraising event.  Wednesday Nov, 6 is Bedford's Harveys night. Go to the local restaurant between 4-8 p.m. and say you are from Bedford Public School and 20 percent of your purchase will be donated to the school in support of the new playground structure.

Teacher Kristin Hinz at Avon Public School has been working with students in Grades 5 and 6 at to put on the musical Frozen in December. Students will be working hard after school on Tuesday and Wednesday to put on the production, however parent volunteers are needed to help with the costumes for the production. Huron Perth Catholic District School Board Updates:

The HPCDSB has released their EQAO results.

In a press release, Director of Education, Chris N. Roehrig said, “Our elementary results continue to demonstrate excellence in relation to the rest of the Province; at the same time we understand the need to keep our focus on improvement especially in the Intermediate Division and in Mathematics.” Roehrig said, “The Board recently approved an ambitious strategic plan which sets the stage for stronger results going forward.”

In honour of World Mental Health Day which took place earlier this month, HPCDSB announced their new three year Mental Health Roadmap. In a press release, Katie Westbrook, the mental health lead for the board, said, “In our commitment to nurturing the whole person, this three-year Mental Health and Addictions Road Map is a testament to our belief that every student deserves a safe and supportive environment to flourish.”
