Annual Handbags for Hospice tickets sell out fast

The event helps keep the hospice service free for all patients and families

A local event to support the Rotary Hospice is coming up next weekend, and tickets sold out fast.

The annual Handbags for Hospice event is taking place Thursday, but tickets sold out nearly right away, which was very exciting for the events committee. 

“We were thrilled that the tickets sold out so fast,” said Lucy Stewart, the director of fund development and stewardship. “We’ve been working away at this since February so to see all the tickets sell out so fast was thrilling.”

The sixth annual Handbag for Hospice will be taking place at the Arden Park Hotel, and it's an event that is sure to be the talk of the town.

“We have a silent auction, a live auction, a wine wall, as well as our golden tickets which cost $100 and winners will get amazon prizes valued over $2,000,” said Stewart. “New this year we have paper purses. We had a committee member make them using origami techniques, and inside there will be a little surprise.” 

Handbags for Hospice first started when the local hospice opened in 2019, and the event offers a chance for organizers to pull back the curtain and share stories along with new upcoming projects. 

“During the live auction we take a little pause and talk about our new projects,” said Stewart. “We then ask everyone in attendance to donate to what we call our fun to need.” 

There is no cost for anyone to stay at the hospice, but the service isn’t cheap. The Ministry of Health provides only roughly fifty percent of funding which covers operational costs.

“All the other pieces that make the hospice a home, you know things like baked goods, lights, heating, wi-fi, televisions in rooms and more need to come from fundraising,” said Stewart. 

The local hospice needs to raise close to a million dollars a year to help maintain the service.
