The Local Community Food Centre and United Way Perth-Huron are excited to announce Community Connections — Federal Election Edition, a non-partisan, three-week educational series including a conversational event with Perth-Wellington candidates for the federal election.
Following the success of events held for the provincial election, this Wednesday evening series will provide participants with an understanding of the federal government, introduce them to local candidates, and help them make informed voting decisions.
- Wednesday, April 9, participants will learn about the federal government and identify issues to discuss with candidates.
- Wednesday, April 16, the Local will host a candidates meeting where voters can discuss important topics with the candidates in small groups.
- Wednesday, April 23, participants will learn how to follow-up with candidates and make a plan to vote.
For all three weeks, the sessions at The Local run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
“The goal of The Local’s Community Connection series is always to bring people around tables to learn, share, and grow together,” said Margaret Smart, Executive Director of the Local. “With the provincial election series, we saw the power of neighbours sitting around the table, talking through important issues with their candidates. We are excited to continue these significant conversations with our federal candidates. We live in times when creating opportunities for respectful civic engagement is essential!”
"We heard great feedback about the provincial election events we ran with the Local," added Ryan Erb, Executive Director of United Way Perth-Huron. "It’s too seldom that we get to connect with our candidates and neighbours in this kind of setting. Events like this help us build the strong communities we need to tackle the challenges ahead of us."
Community members are welcome to sign up for the whole series or just for the candidates meeting. Anyone interested can register at perthhuron.unitedway.ca or contact Julie Docker Johnson at The Local CFC: 519-508-3663 ext. 1005 or [email protected]. All registered political candidates are welcome to participate. If you are a candidate and want to represent your party at this event, contact Julie Docker Johnson at 519-508-3663 ext. 1005 or [email protected] no later than Friday, April 4.
