For pet owners in Stratford, nail trimming and regular grooming are no longer a source of stress and anxiety, thanks to Tyler Jouwsma, owner of Paws on Patrol Stratford. Specializing in mobile pet care, Jouwsma emphasizes the importance of comfort and convenience for pets, especially those with high anxiety, PTSD, and fear-based reactions.

"The whole business model is designed around the comfort and convenience for the animal and the owner," says Jouwsma. "Doing it in the comfort of their own home goes a long way, and having their owners present makes them feel a lot safer. This approach has proven effective in helping pets calm down and relax, making the nail treatment process and other services less intimidating."

Many pet owners struggle to manage their pets' anxiety during grooming and veterinary visits. The journey alone can be a source of stress, especially for animals that dislike car rides.

Jouwsma explains, "A lot of times, animals just don't like being in cars. Then, they get to the establishment and have to get used to the new surroundings, tools, and people. It's overwhelming for dogs with anxiety or PTSD."

By offering in-home services, Paws on Patrol eliminates these stressors. "When I come over, they're in their comfort zone with their owners. They only have to get used to me," Jouwsma adds.

The positive impact of this approach extends beyond just reducing anxiety. Regular nail trimming is essential for pets' health, preventing early arthritis and joint issues.

"Even though the task may be daunting or frightening for the pet, it still has to be done. There are fear-free techniques and methods to make it easier," Jouwsma emphasizes.

One such technique involves using a cone instead of a muzzle for small breeds and cats.

"A cone can create a barrier and boundary without being as invasive as a muzzle, which can make the animal feel confined," explains Jouwsma. "I always try to avoid making the animal feel confined or forced into something against their will."

Jouwsma's journey into the pet service industry began with helping his mother, who did rescue work primarily focused on cats. "I helped her with trimming and pet care tasks, and I realized other pet owners might need similar help. I decided to give it a shot, and now, a year and a half later, we have over 800 clients."

The business has expanded to include various subscription and bundle packages to make services affordable and convenient. "Routine and consistency are crucial, especially for pets with anxiety or PTSD. Our yearly subscriptions encourage regular appointments, which help build a positive routine for the pets," says Jouwsma.

Paws on Patrol also offers add-on services like de-shedding, ear cleaning, and paw fur trimming, which help increase the overall service value while keeping costs lower than traditional groomers.

"The whole idea is to customize the service to what the owner wants without overcharging," Jouwsma notes.

Looking ahead, Jouwsma has plans to expand the business further. "We are looking at offering full grooming services both mobile and in a stationary storefront. We're also starting to offer at-home pet sitting."

Paws on Patrol Stratford goes beyond just providing essential pet care services. Jouwsma is also deeply committed to supporting the community through initiatives like the Pet Pantry Drive.

"We support about 10-20 families on average per week through our Pet Pantry Drive, aiming to keep pets off the streets by providing necessary supplies," he explains. This proactive effort ensures that pets remain in loving homes even during tough financial times.

Additionally, Jouwsma is actively involved in the community through SPAA (Stratford Pets and Animals Alliance) and hosts events like the Jingle Paws Holiday Market, Stratford's only pet-friendly holiday market. This year's market will be held at Evermore on Dec. 1.

"Last year, we raised over 850 pounds of pet food and $2,000 in donations. It's rewarding to give back to the community and help animals in need."

For pet owners who are apprehensive about mobile services, Jouwsma offers reassurance:

"Doing it at home with the people they love can go a long way. Keep an open mind, be patient, and you'll see a much better response than going somewhere else."

As Paws on Patrol continues to grow, Jouwsma remains committed to providing high-quality, fear-free services that benefit both pets and their owners.

"Every pet is different, and we tailor our approach to meet their needs. It's all about making them comfortable and turning a negative experience into a pawsitive one."
