One of Stratford's most beloved traditions returns for its 23rd summer, celebrating the very essence of music. Stratford Summer Music is a month-long festival that brings together a remarkable lineup of Grammy-award winners, Juno nominees, and musicians who have set their melodies to film.
This extraordinary festival showcases an enchanting fusion of classical, contemporary, and jazz music. However, at its core, Stratford Summer Music goes beyond the boundaries of a typical music festival. Mark Fewer, the Artistic Director of Stratford Summer Music, shares his perspective on the festival's unique approach:
"Our mission at Stratford Summer Music is to unlock the transformative power of music and offer audiences a profound connection with live performances by some of the most renowned artists from around the world,” Fewer said. “We strive to harness music as a means of education, reaching beyond mere entertainment and fostering a deeper appreciation for its inherent beauty."
The festival curates a lineup of artists and performers who captivate audiences from the festival's opening day to its magnificent finale. This year, Stratford Summer Music culminates with a grand performance by the world-famous John Pizzarelli, who will grace the stage in Stratford for the first time at The Avondale.
Pizzarelli's unparalleled style and his ability to breathe new life into jazz classics have made him a global sensation. Other highly anticipated events include sold-out shows featuring Juno nominee Michael Kaeshammer and the charismatic jazz performer and pianist Laila Biali.
"Stratford has always been a vibrant hub of cultural and artistic activities, and Stratford Summer Music stays true to this spirit by introducing audiences to unforgettable musical performances," Fewer explained. "We prioritize the art and the music, offering audiences a standard of excellence that is rare to find."
In addition to a diverse range of concerts hosted at various venues across the city, visitors can indulge in free music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with “Barge Music”. This floating stage provides passersby with an enchanting experience of afternoon entertainment as they leisurely explore the streets of Stratford.
Another significant aspect of Stratford Summer Music is its esteemed jazz academy, which provides aspiring musicians with a unique opportunity to learn from seasoned veterans in the industry. Some participants even have the privilege of performing at select Stratford Summer Music shows, showcasing the festival's commitment to nurturing young talent.
At a time when some mass concerts and festivals prioritize profit above all else, Stratford Summer Music stands as a testament to the enduring power of the arts. It is a celebration that fosters meaningful connections between people and the dedicated artists who pour their hearts and souls into their craft.
"When we present our concerts, our goal is to bring people closer to the essence of music," asserts Fewer. "Stratford Summer Music, as a not-for-profit organization, remains committed to the true artistry and spirit of Stratford—a place where all roads lead to music."
Stratford Summer Music will take place from July 20 to August 13 at various venues throughout the picturesque town of Stratford.
