Stratford man tries to flee police, crashes into cruiser

WATERLOO – A Stratford man was arrested in Waterloo Monday after police there recovered a stolen vehicle.

Waterloo Regional Police Service report that Monday approximately 11:50 p.m., police responded to the area of King Street North and University Avenue East for reports of a stolen GMC pickup.

Officers attended the area and located the stolen vehicle in the area of Columbia Street West and Hazel Street. The driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to flee from police at a high rate of speed, collided with a police cruiser, and then fled the area on foot. The suspect was arrested after a foot pursuit.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage as a result of the collision.

There were no injuries reported.

As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old Stratford male, was charged with:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Dangerous operation
  • Flight from police
  • Assault peace officer
  • Fail to remain
  • Failure to comply with release order (two counts)
  • Drive while under suspension

The man was also arrested on an outstanding warrant and was held in police custody for a bail hearing.
